PRACTICE SKILLS:
All engineering personnel have, at some stage in
their careers, undertaken installation works and/or worked in
a contracting environment.
This has been achieved either by direct
employment by a Contractor or within a structured course of study.
Some
have also been directly employed by Local Authorities.
Many commenced
employment as tradespersons and have subsequently progressed
through study to professional qualifications.
This combination
of practical and theoretical knowledge provides a solid technical
base for survey, design and contract administration duties. It
also provides a basis for contractor supervision and monitoring
the performance of service and maintenance organisations. The
cumulative knowledge and experience of public sector housing,
on both an individual dwelling and an estate wide basis, is considerable. No
less so is that associated with public buildings.
When coupled
with the experience of direct liaison with residents and building
users, gained by individuals during their current and previous
employment, this practice considers itself something of a specialist
in this market with considerable experience of the needs and
problems associated with this type of work.
The approach is equally
applicable to projects in the private sector where consideration
of the users needs is the key to a successful design solution.
